Count down to the World Cup

With only a few days remaining until the World Cup Kick off on June 12 the CTC Ten team is a buzz with activity. Several exciting events are scheduled at the Chris Campbell Memorial Field to coincide with the world’s biggest sporting event. The newly constructed club house (pictured on the left) will be dedicated by the CTC Ten board and the Site-B community. On-going throughout the World Cup will be the IKAMVALETHU Cup where children’s teams from the community will play in a month-long soccer tournament. Stay tuned for more World Cup updates!

24 Hour Awareness Event

The second 24 Hour Awareness Event took place at the CTC Ten Field at the beginning of May. Run in partnership with AMANDLA, the event celebrated all of the different programs that run on the field each week. Participating groups included the Heads Up Program, Girls & Boys U-16 Tournaments and the Crime Prevention League. The event draws attention to the great work that goes on at the field everyday and provides an opportunity for the community to connect, learn and most importantly – have fun! March was a busy month for CTC Ten with two very successful fundraising events – the 3rd Annual Bowling Event & the Chris Campbell Clinic. Proceeds will be used to complete the construction on the club house and support ongoing programs.

The Bowling Event saw a great turnout with close to 200 attendees. The lanes were packed all night as DJ Billy O’Brian mc-ed and people enjoyed food, drinks and bowling. We auctioned off prizes baskets, South African art and lots of Philadelphia sports tickets. Lucky raffle winner Mike Guyer went home with $2500! Checkout a slideshow of the event here:

At the Chris Campbell Clinic, we hosted more then 50 kids (& Kixx Mascot SoccerRoo!) for an afternoon of soccer fun. Kids enjoyed coaching drills, scrimmages and expert instruction by the F&M team & the FCS Varsity Squads.

Chris Campbell Clinic is March 14th. The Friends’ Central Varsity Soccer Team, in conjunction with Franklin & Marshall College, are excited to announce the third annual Chris Campbell Clinic. The clinic, which is open to all boys and girls from 1st through 5th grade, will include tremendous soccer instruction from high-school and college level athletes and the opportunity to have a lot fun while helping those in need.

When: March 14, 2010 1-5pm (1st-5th grade boys and girls)
Where: The Shimada Gymnasium (Friends’ Central School)

David Beckham visits Chris Campbell Memorial Field

CTC 10 Field Manager Ryan McGonigle played host to David Beckham, former South African captain Lucas Radebe and FA Chairman David Triesman as part of a “Coaching for Hope” session held at the Chris Campbell Memorial Field.
Coaching for Hope is the official internation charity of the FA for 2009.
This event brought international attention to the field and to project’s larger goals.
Beckham spoke glowingly of the field project.
“It is amazing to visit a project like this and see the effect football has on young people. Football has the power to change lives and these youngsters are able to learn valuable lessons through their love of the game.”
“I’ve been able to go to different places around the world – and different townships. And every time you get surprised, and this is a huge surprise. It such a great surprise to have a place for the kids to come and play and be safe. And it’s been created for them. It is really special.”
The London Times reports on a different angle of the event, but with great shots of the field.
Our project also gets attention in Germany and Ecuador.

Field Construction Update

The field construction is complete and currently it is being used by the Ikhusi School daily as well as evening and weekend community leagues and training. The field dedication took place in January and was attended by a dozen CTC Ten Foundation members and friends from the United States. Groundbreaking for the clubhouse is underway with completion scheduled for the spring of 2009!

Soccer Clinic 2008

On April 6th, 2008 Friends’ Central School hosted the first annual Christopher Campbell Soccer Clinic. Attended by 120 children in grades 1-5, the clinic was a resounding success. The kids received experienced instruction from current and alumnae FCS Varsity athletes, Franklin & Marshall Boys and Girls soccer team members, and established coaches. Leading the way were head coaches Chris Campbell Sr. ( FCS), Dan Wagner (F&M), and Mark Wagner (Eastern University).

The clinic began with the participants moving through a series of stations, all but one concentrating on a specific skill or talent. The exception consisted of a video/slideshow of Chris’ soccer highlights and snapshots. The most popular station was the Speed Shot station, which used a radar gun to record the speed of a shot on goal. Other stations focused on different elements of the game, such as conditioning, heading, trapping, passing, and defense.

Next, the kids were divided up into teams for a series of round robins. Highlights included a final minute penalty-kick victory in the 3rd grade game, and the 5th grade girls beating the 5th grade boys.

Finally, parents were invited to join their children as they listened to Guest Speaker Dan Wagner. Coach Wagner gave the audience tremendous insight into the life and legacy of Chris, as well as the specifics and lessons learned from F&M’s recent trip to South Africa as part of the Africa Project. On the way out, the participants received commemorative mini-balls to go along with the t-shirts that had been given out at the beginning of the day.

The proceeds from the clinic went to the FCS Christopher Campbell ‘04 Fund for Soccer and Education, a fund created by two FCS seniors who played for Coach Campbell. Each year, the team will decide where the proceeds of the clinic will be donated. This year, all of the $16, 500 raised through this clinic have been donated to Franklin & Marshall’s Africa Project.

CTC Ten would like to thank the Friends’ Central community for their incredible support of this endeavor, from the fundraising through the day itself. Without it, the goal of teaching kids to play with the same values that Chris displayed would never have been accomplished. Please look for the clinic next year!
